Everything between seeing a word and owning it
WordEdge is built around one belief: vocabulary and pronunciation are the same problem. Here is what that looks like in practice.
Flip cards that hold a whole dictionary entry
The front is the word, its pronunciation and a tap to hear it. Flip it and you get every meaning grouped by part of speech — not just the first definition someone wrote.
- Every meaning the word has, not just the first definition
- Meanings grouped by part of speech — noun, verb, adjective
- Meanings in your own language, where available
- Inflection tables — plurals, tenses, comparatives — on the same card
- Examples folded away until you want them
- Swipe left and right through the deck; long-press to retire a word
- "Learn more" opens every meaning full screen, one per slide
Asked in different ways, so you actually know it
A word you can only recognize is a word you cannot use. Review rotates through several kinds of question, each testing a different direction of recall — and asks you to say the word out loud.
- Pronunciation: say it, and the score is your answer
- Meaning: see the word, choose the definition
- Recall: see the definition, choose the word
- Listening: hear it, pick what you heard
- Spelling: type it letter by letter from the meaning and audio
- Cloze: fill the blank in a real example sentence
- Words with several meanings: set the priority one, and reviews ask about it (Pro)
- Stuck? Skip it, or jump straight into the word detail
A score for every sound, not just the word
Record yourself and WordEdge lines your attempt up against the target pronunciation, phoneme by phoneme, and tells you exactly where it went wrong.
- Overall accuracy plus a score per phoneme
- Substitutions spelled out: you said /s/ where /θ/ belongs
- Missed and added sounds flagged separately
- Scored against the accent you choose to aim for
- Optional gentler feedback that credits sounds carried over from your native language
- Play your own recording back against the model
- Prefer privacy? Score on your phone, and your recordings never leave it
Reviews timed to your memory, not a calendar
WordEdge uses FSRS, a modern spaced-repetition algorithm, to estimate how well you know each word and when you’re about to forget it — and asks then, not before.
- Every word returns just before you would forget it
- Fewer reviews for the same results
- Away for a week, or a month? Pick up where you left off — no punishing pile
- Hard words come back sooner; easy ones stretch to weeks, then months
- Remember more or review less — one setting, your call
- Words stay in rotation until you retire them
Higher retention (e.g., 95%): Shortens review intervals, meaning you must review cards much more frequently.
Lower retention (e.g., 80%): Lengthens intervals, decreasing daily reviews, but increases the risk of forgetting.
Decks that match how you actually study
Sort words into groups, and with Pro, nest them — English › Exams › IELTS. Every group shows what is learned, learning, new and due right now.
- Curated lists adopt into your deck as their own folder
- Add words from the built-in dictionary as you meet them
- Per-word notes, practice history and pronunciation stats
- Practice pronunciation, learn or review any group
The quieter things that keep you going
Sound profile
A radar of your accuracy on the sounds that matter most, built from every attempt you have made, with your weakest sounds called out.
Weak-sound drill
Free shows you which sounds are weak. Pro adds a drill that practices exactly those, and can build a fresh word list around them.
Lists that keep growing
Curated lists keep growing. With Pro, when a list you have started is updated, re-sync it to pull in the new words.
Built-in dictionary
Look up any English word: meanings by part of speech, inflection tables, examples, how common the word is, and one tap to save it into a deck.
Words from ShadowEdge

Streaks and goals
Set a daily word goal and per-weekday reminders. The streak counts days you practiced, not days you opened the app.
